Saved Nassau from the Brink of Bankruptcy
"Suozzi led Nassau from the brink of bankruptcy to fiscal health in a matter of three years."
- New York Daily News
Tom Suozzi is most well known as the engineer Nassau County's financial turnaround. Tom dismantled the decades of mismanagement by the Republican machine in just his first budget. Before he took office, Nassau was rated the Worst Run County in America by the Maxwell School of Public Affairs at Syracuse University. Tom's reform tactics, innovation, and management skills have transformed Nassau into a national model of county governance.
Tom was charged with the tall task of saving Nassau from a multi million dollar deficit and accomplished what no Nassau County Executive had before. He is the architect of Nassau's recovery plan, and returned fiscal stability by eliminating wasteful contracts, cutting the workforce to the smallest in 30 years, reinventing government operations, reducing borrowing, and achieving historic labor concessions. Tom not only balanced the budget and eliminated the waste, but also renewed in everyone the spirit and pride of Nassau County.
Tom's exceptional accomplishments have not gone without recognition. During Tom's seven years in office, Nassau has received 13 bond upgrades, more than any other municipality in the nation during a similar time period. In 2005, Tom was named Governing Magazine's "Public Official of the Year". Governing Magazine called Tom "...the man who spearheaded Nassau's remarkable turnaround from the brink of fiscal disaster".
