Nassau officials fired six employees Tuesday morning at the Traffic and Parking Violations Agency for fixing a total of more than 100 parking and traffic tickets for themselves, their friends and family members.
The theft cost the county $25,000 in lost revenue, Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi said at a news conference.
District Attorney Kathleen Rice said her office will now look into the cases to see if there is enough evidence to prosecute the employees, including one assistant director at the agency, for crimes.
"Clearly there was one line for your average Joe, and another line for people with connections," Rice said at the news conference.
Suozzi said the agency will begin an immediate review of its procedures to make sure nothing like this can happen again.
Among other things, he said workers will have electronic "footprints" on their work so supervisors can trace who dismissed a ticket and why. Also, supervisors will had review all dismissals once a week, checking names on dismissals against family members of employees, Suozzi said.
Immigration Reform is an issue that's relevant now more than ever. I'll be discussing Monday at Fordham - join this important conversation!
