Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray released a new set of conditions on September 10 for the Lighthouse project that the town board will require before approval of the zoning for the site. This move came just weeks before the final hearing on September 22. "It's hard to imagine that with only 23 days until the hockey season begins, Supervisor Murray would bring up 10 new issues that could have been discussed at any time during the past three years," said Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi. Nassau County will hold its third annual gun buyback program beginning on Saturday, September 12. Residents may turn in all unlicensed guns and be given $200 cash in exchange. Previous gun buybacks resulted in the recovery of more than 700 guns. (NEWSDAY)

Nassau County residents can turn in expired and unused prescription drugs, as well as illegal drugs, on Saturday, September 12, through a county-wide program to reduce drug addiction. "Once teenagers are addicted to prescription drugs, they look for where else they can get the same high, and too often the answer is heroin," Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi said. The program will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m at local police precincts across Nassau. (NEWSDAY)

The 250,000-member union which represents workers in many fields cited Suozzi's strong support for the Lighthouse project and his collaborative approach towards labor issues as reasons for their endorsement. County Executive Tom Suozzi announced that the daughter of a former Nassau County worker has been arrested and a current employee fired - both because of workers' compensation fraud. "We will not tolerate people who try to scam the system," Suozzi said at a news conference in Mineola. "I have a message for those people: Let these two cases put you on notice - we're watching, and if you're cheating, we'll catch you." (NEWSDAY).

This week, the Nassau County Executive, Tom Suozzi, convened a summit on the heroin crisis. The district attorney, representatives of federal and local law enforcement, school and social service officials and medical professionals were on hand to offer expertise and guidance. It’s to Mr. Suozzi’s credit that the focus, was not just on high-profile raids and gang crackdowns, but also on treatment, prevention, education and tough community-based policing.
